HAPPY 16TH BIRTHDAY, SAMI!

My fabulous dear niece turns 16 today, and although Virginia rules have changed and she can't get her license for another 3 months yet, this is still a monumental occurence. Charles, I hope you have a fantastic birfday and that all your wildest dreams come true by voting for Pedro.

Dishwashers are Jesus' way of saying it's OK to be lazy...

...and other things I love about my new apartment

So I've hinted at it, alluded to it, and consoled Shelby about it--now to elaborate. At the end of September/beginning of October, I got word that my apartment complex had been sold. This info was through back channels, and without anything formal from the new ownership, I didn't give it much thought. Cross that bridge, yadda yadda. Well, in mid-October (read: all of 3 weeks notice) the new owners informed we tenants that our rents were going up $450 A MONTH. For an apartment with roughly 300 square feet that hasn't been renovated since Eisenhower was President. Say it with me: HELL FUCKING NO. But, between school and work, and preexisting plans for out-of-town trips, etc, finding a new place almost pushed your ADD over the edge. I solved this by signing a lease in early November, essentially having both the old apartment and the new one for the entire month of November. Cheap? No. Less hassle? Yes. Thus, once my first quarter officially ended November 9th, The Great Move of '06 began. Lacking boxes I packed the lion's share of my belongings in Trader Joe's brown bags, and enlisted the help of my dear mother (I bribed her with dinner and a Bill Frisell concert, so it wasn't a total loss for her) and the unbelievably good-natured and gracious muscle power of Pam, Suzi, Tom, Steve, and Davida. I brought over the last piece of my stuff on Tuesday before Thanksgiving and turned in the keys Sunday, and now I have just one, cute, convenient, metro-walkable, Penty Row-walkable, 750 square foot, *big* backyarded, garbage disposaled, dishwashered, washer/dryerd, ALL UTILITIES (even cable) INCLUDED apartment that I. Love. I can even have a couch and guests, comfortably. Y'all are invited anytime.

On Saturday Mom and I spent the day at the Naval Academy, watching Navy pound the snot out of Temple on the football field. It was a great day, complete with perfect football weather, tailgating with Davida and her CO (and some random, colorful townies who reinforced all the things I love about Maryland), a Prowler fly-by, and dinner with some of my dad's '58 classmates at a swank riverfront restaurant (where I had the most insane macadamia-nut-encrusted duck medallions). So this shot is just an extension of that which is US Navy goodness.

One of these passed me on
my way in to work this
afternoon. It's even cooler in person.

My mom just sent me an email about how Xerox is participating in a free "Thank You" program for American service members serving overseas. By going to this website you can select from one of several notes designed by American children (my favorite, by Ivan, is above), add a note of thanks, and send it out. Especially right now, with the holidays looming and so many men and women serving far from home, what a great idea to reach out and let them know it's appreciated.

Check this out. No, seriously, you'll be glad you did.

Thanks in advice.

Hello, my name is Anne.

We've met before, but you may not remember me. I used to have this blog, BlogSport; perhaps you've heard of it? I posted faithfully on everything from mustard-spiced cheese to be eaten with beer to how consistently disappointing the Redskins are. But then...well, you all know what happened then. For the last 2 months I have been a bad friend...a bad sister and daughter...and as Shelby pointed out, a bad aunt...because all I have done, with very few exceptions, is shuttle between work and school. But as of 9 o'clock last night I finished my last final for this quarter and for the next 18 days my life is MINE again. Now, I will spend a good portion of that moving, but that's another story for another time. For now, when I have free time I won't be thinking about the Economist articles I'm not reading or the studying I'm not doing, or planning out my food for an 18-hour day that usually starts at 4 a.m. and doesn't end until 10 p.m. I am so excited for TV, and football, and dinner with friends, and SLEEP. Not necessarily in that order.

Oy...oy...OY!

Just a little pick-me-up on a dreary Saturday. Check out the S. Korean player at 1:57 and my husband at 3:10. Mama said.
